The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is the research, development and evaluation agency of the U.S. Department of Justice. By providing equipment, training and technical assistance, and improving the safety and effectiveness of criminal justice technology and access to that technology, NIJ is helping to meet the needs of criminal justice practitioners nationwide. This booklet provides an overview of NIJ's mission and organization; describes how NIJ sets its technology research agenda; outlines the agency's research, development, testing and evaluation process; and provides an annotated list of selected Web sites. In addition, the booklet describes NIJ's standards and compliance testing program and its strategic partnerships with other agencies. Finally, the booklet outlines the criminal justice field's high-priority technology needs and the agency's response in the following areas: protecting the public; ensuring officer safety; confirming the guilty and protecting the innocent; improving the efficiency of justice; and enabling informed decision-making.
